Another
annual program is the recognition of an Iowa Communicator of the Year.
The recipient of this award must be an individual or organization that:
consistently
exhibits exceptional communication skills;
has
demonstrated a significant understanding of the need for open,
effective communication between schools and their publics; and
promotes
the positive in Iowa education.
Nominations are
accepted from any member of the Iowa educational community. Recipients
are honored at ISPRA's spring conference.
Marcia Hughes, Community Relations Supervisor for the Cedar Rapids CSD,
has been named 2008 Communicator
of the Year by the Iowa School Public Relations Association. She
received the award during the ISPRA spring conference, held in Des
Moines.
“We are thrilled and happy that Marcia has been named the Communicator
of the Year,” noted Dr. Dave Markward, superintendent. “For those
of us who work with her, it comes as no surprise. She is truly deserving
of the honor. We are so fortunate that she has chosen to use her
skills for the benefit of all of us in the Cedar Rapids Community School
District.”
Marcia joined the Cedar Rapids Community Schools in 1996. She began her
current role in 2004. As Community Relations Supervisor, she manages
the district’s public relations effort and also facilitates the volunteer
services program. She previously served as a Work-Based Learning
Coordinator, developing the high school student internship program
and helping to launch the regional Workplace Learning Connection.
Active
in the community, Hughes works with the Leadership for Five Seasons
Program, the Governor’s Volunteer Awards Program, and the Greater Cedar
Rapids Community Foundation Scholarship Program. She is past president
of the Leaders In Volunteerism and currently serves as vice president of
the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance.
